In Honor of Barb Lederer

“Home, good roots, and traditions mean a lot to us all, and Shelby's home to hundreds of families who have contributed to Carton Service’s sustainability and growth for over 95 years. This effort and investment to revitalize Shelby’s downtown and provide improved living spaces for all Shelby residents is exciting and welcomed by our team at Carton Service. We want to help ensure this project's success and related community improvements as a way of thanking this home of ours and helping foster Shelby’s vibrance and prosperity for years to come.”

“We know that keeping our little corner of the world a place we love takes work, and it is work we take on happily. Our Board of Directors was aware of the Community Improvement Corporation’s revitalization effort from the very beginning and was the first to invest in the park project. Leading by example, The Shelby Foundation demonstrated to the community the magnitude of the plan and it gave donors confidence to also contribute. Contributing the largest gift in The Shelby Foundation's history really showcases our ability to make a difference in the community, as well as our confidence in the project and in Shelby’s future.”

Positive momentum is happening in Shelby with downtown improvements as well as the city school's campus project. We remember what the downtown was like in the late 70's and early 80's, and we'd like to see that energy return. CIC's plan will make a big impact. Our hope is that the momentum attracts others who will take pride and ownership in the city they live in.

In memory of David and Jeanne Tarvin & Ken and Jean Albert

Our parents taught us not to take more than you give, and we are thrilled that at this point in our lives to invest in the future of Shelby. We both were able to experience downtown Shelby when we were growing up. The downtown was filled with activities and businesses that drew you in – from going to the movies, sidewalk sales, to getting a bite to eat or getting a soda after school. As young advocates take the lead to instill new life in the downtown, our hope is that younger generations will see how wonderful it is to live in Shelby and raise their families here.

Rotary’s motto is “Service Above Self,” and the Downtown Revitalization Project was one way to put our service into action. The Rotary Club of Shelby recognized the importance of giving back to our city, sought to contribute to the project, and be a part of lasting change in our community. We have a vision of a downtown where people can eat, work, play, and live. The Rotary Club wishes for a community where local businesses thrive now and into the future. In addition, our club hopes for Shelby to be a place desirable to raise families, and a place where people seek to live and work after they graduate.

As a kid, I remember a bustling Main Street and the time I spent riding my bike through town past all the stores open for business. Whether I was wasting quarters playing the WWF wrestling video game at Napoli’s or stopping at The Brickley eating curly fries for lunch with my mom, there were always cars and people downtown. As a lifelong Shelby resident and now business owner, I promised myself that if given the opportunity I wanted to be part of the solution to help revive our downtown. It is my hope that this project will be the catalyst.

The Karl and Maxine Giller Family Corner Bench.

Our family has a rich history in Shelby. Grandfather Dennis moved to Shelby in the late 1890’s and met our grandmother, a Shelby High School grad. In 1919, grandfather Giller moved to Shelby. Our parents, Karl Giller and Maxine Dennis Giller, were both raised here. Our father started and owned Snowhite Dry Cleaners. Both of our parents were devoted to all things Shelby, and all five of us are SHS graduates. On our mother’s 90th birthday in 2006, we set up a fund at The Shelby Foundation in honor of our parents. We are using the fund along with current contributors to make the gift because we feel this project will go a long way to jumpstarting the revitalization of Main Street.
